Nine New Services, and a Wiki Update
A couple weeks ago, I announced that certain Folk Zone services were going on hiatus and wanted to prioritize services that people actually use. And so, today I'm excited to announce I've added nine new services for people to freely use!
What's New
- sheet.folk.zone: EtherCalc is a collaborative spreadsheet tool. I added this initially because the Pillowfort Archival Initiative needed to coordinate. Share a URL and edit cells together.
- pillow.folk.zone: Pillowexport converts a Pillowfort archive saved through the Tassel extension into Markdown for Hugo, Eleventy, Jekyll, and other static site generators. This is custom-made based on an earlier Medium export project, and runs entirely in your browser.
- md.folk.zone: HedgeDoc is similar to Etherpad, but is focused more on Markdown. Collaborative real-time co-editing.
- draw.folk.zone: WBO is a shared whiteboard. Sketch together in a browser, and boards save automatically.
- meet.folk.zone: Rallly is a scheduling poll tool. It's an alternative to Doodle. Create a poll and send the link, others add the times that work for them.
- send.folk.zone: Allows you to send and share encrypted self-destructing files. Files expire after download, or a time limit.
- chef.folk.zone: CyberChef is GCHQ's data swiss-army-knife. You can encode, decode, encrypt, parse, compress, and it's all client-side.
- tools.folk.zone: IT-Tools is similarly a big collection of single-purpose utilities for developers. Hashers, converters, generators, formatters, also all client-side.
- archive.folk.zone: ArchiveBox is self-hosted web archiving. Add a URL and it saves the page in half a dozen formats.
Most of these services do not require an account.
The Folk Zone Wiki
Next, I wanted to share that I've been working on the wiki. It began as my personal homelab notes, but I've wanted to have it set up for generalized usage. I've gone through any personal identifiers and rewritten for a general reader. Instructions use placeholders like ~you and user@server.
I've also added new material, ported from scattered repo docs, including a shell scripting reference (sed, awk, grep, jq, find/xargs, curl, regex, bash recipes), a WriterDeck guide, Android-as-server docs, incident writeups and the folk.zone policy and email setup.
I'm hoping that the wiki will start to be used and edited by others who would like an alternative source of information for our human, living web.
Finally, I also properly configured Folk Zone's email! Send me any thoughts you might have to hello@folk.zone.
