Putting Services on Hiatus
When I launched folk.zone, I knew the pitch was ambitious: a whole commons of free, federated services run on home hardware by one person. I planned to have Mastodon, Lemmy, Pixelfed, BookWyrm, Forgejo, a radio station. I believed that if I built it, people would come.
Several months in, the honest answer is: mostly, they didn't.
What's going on hiatus
Effective today, the following services are offline:
- social (social.folk.zone): Mastodon
- lemmy (lemmy.folk.zone): community forums and Reddit alternative
- pics (pics.folk.zone): Pixelfed
- books (books.folk.zone): BookWyrm
- git (git.folk.zone): Forgejo
- craft.wang: the crafting community app
- radio (radio.folk.zone): the AzuraCast station
Why?
Resource reality. I had issues with OOM-killing containers and my machine periodically locking up entirely. There's also been a lack of interest, and redunancy. There are many others who are providing similar services, and I don't think there's a need for me to reinvent the wheel.
What this is not
This is not the end of folk.zone!
- All data is preserved. The containers are stopped, not deleted. Everything (databases, uploads, and volumes) are intact.
- If interest materializes, services can come back.
- The experiment continues. Other services stay online: IRC, WriteFreely, the wiki, RSS, Etherpad, PrivateBin, Linkding, Kutt, Opengist, and the rest.
Recommended Alternatives
Here are better homes:
- Federated social (social.folk.zone): social.lol, where I post as @brennan@social.lol, or browse instances on joinmastodon.org
- Forums (lemmy.folk.zone): lemmy.world, beehaw.org, or the instance picker at join-lemmy.org
- Photo sharing (pics.folk.zone): pixelfed.social
- Reading tracking (books.folk.zone): bookwyrm.social, or The StoryGraph
- Git hosting (git.folk.zone): Codeberg, it runs Forgejo, the same software
- Crafting (craft.wang): Ravelry for fiber arts
And for the "one operator, many small services" spirit that folk.zone was going for, these folks do it better:
- omg.lol: the inspiration for this project. Weblog, Mastodon, pastebin, and more under one roof, ~$50/yr
- tildeverse: a federation of pubnixes (tilde.club, tilde.town, tilde.team, envs.net), free shell accounts and community-run services
- SDF: the original public access UNIX system, online since 1987
- Neocities: free static web hosting, the spiritual successor to GeoCities
- Bear Blog / write.as: minimal hosted writing, write.as runs WriteFreely
What I learned
I still believe everything I wrote on the about page. The IndieWeb needs people contributing infrastructure, not just conversation. But infrastructure nobody uses isn't infrastructure.
