ways to help build the commons

join the community

The most direct way to contribute is to use the services and be part of the community. At launch, registration is invite-only or application-based. Find me at @brennan@social.lol to get on the list.

write documentation

The wiki at wiki.folk.zone is the canonical home for folk.zone documentation. If you have an account, you can contribute guides, troubleshooting notes, and service-specific documentation. Good documentation makes the commons accessible to more people.

report issues

If you encounter a bug, a broken link, or something that does not work as expected, report it. For service-specific issues, use the built-in report function where available. For general folk.zone issues, email hello@folk.zone or mention @folkzone@social.folk.zone.

contribute code

The folk.zone infrastructure is not currently open source, but the services we run are. If you want to contribute upstream:

host your own

The best way to support the IndieWeb is to run your own services. folk.zone is one instance in a larger ecosystem. If you have the hardware and the inclination, consider deploying some of these services yourself. The wiki will eventually have deployment guides for each service.

financial support

folk.zone does not currently accept donations. The operator pays for the hardware, the internet connection, and the email provider out of pocket. If this changes, it will be announced on social.folk.zone and the wiki.

spread the word

If you find folk.zone useful, tell people. Post about it on the fediverse. Link to it from your blog. The more people know about independent infrastructure, the more likely they are to use it or build their own.

code of conduct

Contributors to folk.zone, whether through documentation, bug reports, or community participation, are expected to follow the same community standards outlined in the content policy. Be kind, be constructive, assume good faith.
